45th Class Reunion: Remembrances/Plans

Hi Classmates,
It was great seeing all of you Saturday night. I had a wonderful time reminiscing about our time at EHS and learning about what everyone is up to now. I talked to the owners of Savannah Oaks after the reunion and they commented on how great the place was decorated. I promised them a photo for their scrap book. A big thanks to Janis Bivens Brock for organizing and leading the decoration effort.

On my drive back to Atlanta on Sunday I replayed the whole reunion. I found myself laughing at times and also tearing up when I replayed the Memorial Ceremony conducted by Margaret Cheek and Joanne Garner. That was a very touching moment. I also came to the conclusion while replaying the event that several of our classmates probably have a second career. For example: Rebecca Reed, Oscar Host and Comedian(was she not hilarious); Janis Bivens Brock, consultant to Martha Stewart; Loretta Cate, Game Show Host; and Lynda Lewis has to work for the FBI..she can track down anyone.

After the reunion several of us were trying to decide our next luncheon date. We came up with the idea to go ahead and establish a specific day and month for the rest of this year and into 2012. How about the 3rd sat in every 3rd month starting with Aug of this year. That would be August 20th, Nov.19th, 2011... 3rd sat in Feb, May, Aug, Nov of 2012. For those that can make this year's Aug luncheon we will meet at the Gondolier in Athens at 11:30.

I've attached several photos and the following link will allow you to view the entire album through Walgreens photo center. There should be approximately 30 photos in the album.

Don't forget to check out the blog Bob Taylor set up for us. It is etowahhighschoolclassof66.blogspot.com. Thanks Bob.

To our classmates that couldn't make the reunion, we missed you and hope to see you at our next luncheon.

If you can't open the pictures or have questions about the Walgreen site please email me.

See you in August.

Lee Ona Young

After finishing high school I moved to Atlanta and went to work as a secretary in a loan office. My job was very miserable (not what I wanted to do). Later I moved home to Etowah and went to work at Steel City and worked there about a year. While at Steel City I met my future husband Freddy McCulloch. I worked days and he worked nights. After our marriage in 1968, we moved back to Atlanta. I started beauty school in Atlanta while my husband worked for Southern Airlines. After several years we moved back to Etowah. My husband started working at Bowaters paper mill and I opened my beauty shop in East Etowah. I also operated a beauty shop in Woods Hospital in Etowah and NHC and LifeCare nursing homes in Athens as well assisted living Morning Pointe in Athens. After 10 years our son Freddy Jr., our pride and joy, was born. We built two houses in Etowah. In 2000, Freddy was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. I was so blessed to be able to care for Freddy at home. I took early retirement to care for Freddy. During his illness for eight years, we traveled many places and countries. Freddy passed away in 2008. Freddy Jr. became a very successful financial advisor with Wells Fargo in Atlanta. I married Maurice, whom I knew many years at our church and his wife Linda has died two years prior to Freddy. Maurice and I have traveled much and visited our families in Georgia, West Virginia and Texas.

"Welcome to this brand new day. This day has never been lived before. It’s a blank canvas. If you will it so, it can be your masterpiece. As you wake up this morning think of three things you’re grateful for and then get out there and live this day with all the joy, wonder and enthusiasm you can muster"...HHH

Douglas Bryan

Added by Jo Anne Bryan Hooper
Doug was born on December 25th 1948 and passed away April 9th, 1963, our freshman year. He attended Goodsprings School from 1-8th grades. He was my cousin and best friend. Doug loved history and politics. If Doug was alive today I'm sure he would be a good, honest political leader.

I attended Goodsprings School from 1-8 grades. After graduating in 1966 from Etowah High I worked at Alverson's drug store for several years before moving to Cleveland. In Cleveland I attended and graduated from Cleveland State Community College while working at Gibson's pharmacy. After Cleveland State I attended Lee University while working as a Lab tech at Duracell Battery Company. I received a BS degree in Natural Science from Lee. Duracell transferred me to Lagrange Ga. I stayed with Duracell until 1988 and then accepted a job with Belden Wire and Cable in Richmond IN. After 15 years of very cold winters I decided it was time to move back South. Moved to Chattanooga and then to Decatur GA. I am semi-retired but do consulting work from home and I also have my Real Estate License. Plan to stay here for a long time. I am glad to be back in the south and closer to my family and friends.
